VPN connected but no internet on iPhone

You tap connect, the status turns green, the small VPN badge appears in the status bar, and then Safari keeps spinning. This is the single most common support question we get, and in most cases it takes under a minute to fix. The key is to check things in the right order, starting with the most likely and easiest causes before moving to the rare, slower ones.

Work through the six steps below in order. Stop as soon as one of them fixes the problem.

1. Confirm it is really "no internet" and not one broken site

Open two sites from different services, for example, a major news site and a video site. If one loads and the other does not, the tunnel is working and the problem is limited to that service. Try a different line for that service and move on.

If nothing loads at all, keep going. Also check the time. Right after connecting, the first page can take five to ten seconds while the tunnel settles, especially on a slow network. Give it that long before assuming it is stuck.

2. Check for a Wi-Fi login page

Hotel, airport, café, and campus networks often let your phone join the Wi-Fi but block everything until you accept their terms or log in on a page they show you. A VPN cannot tunnel through that page before you complete it, so it can connect without any traffic getting through.

• Disconnect the VPN, open Safari, and go to any plain web address. If a login page appears, complete it.
• Reconnect the VPN afterward. Nono VPN detects most of these portals and alerts you, but not every network announces itself properly.

If the login page never appears and Safari still does nothing with the VPN off, the Wi-Fi itself is down. Switch to cellular data and test again.

3. Switch to a different line

Networks restrict traffic in different ways. Some corporate and campus networks, and some mobile operators, allow only the kind of traffic websites use and block everything else. Nono VPN offers several line types, and different types behave differently on restrictive networks. That is why the app has more than one line in the first place.

1. Open the app and go to the line list.
2. Choose a line in a different location, ideally one marked as a different type from the one you are using.
3. Reconnect and load a page.

If one line works and another does not on the same network, that network is blocking a line type. Stay on the one that works there. You do not need to change anything on your phone.

4. Turn off Low Power Mode and check cellular permission

iOS is aggressive about saving battery, and two settings can quietly interfere with VPN traffic:

• Low Power Mode reduces background activity and can suspend the tunnel a few seconds after you lock the phone. Turn it off in Settings, Battery, then reconnect.
• Cellular data for the app. If cellular data was ever turned off for Nono VPN in Settings, Cellular, the app can connect over Wi-Fi but will not pass traffic on mobile data. Scroll through the app list in Settings, Cellular, and make sure it is turned on.

Wi-Fi Assist can also switch you from a weak Wi-Fi connection to cellular in the middle of a session. The app reconnects on its own when that happens, but you will see a few seconds with no connection while it does.

5. Clear a stale DNS cache with Airplane Mode

Sometimes the phone remembers the wrong address for a website from before the VPN was on and keeps trying to use it inside the tunnel. The fastest reset is Airplane Mode. Turn it on, wait five seconds, turn it off, and reconnect the VPN. This clears old connections and DNS entries at once without restarting the phone.

A full restart does the same thing more slowly. Reinstalling the app does not help here because the cache lives in iOS, not in the app.

6. Look for a conflicting VPN or DNS profile

Only one VPN can be active at a time, and a leftover configuration from another app, a work profile, or a DNS-filtering app can take control of the connection first. Check these two things:

• Settings, General, VPN & Device Management. If another VPN is listed and set to connect on demand, turn that off or remove it.
• Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, and look for any installed profile that mentions DNS or filtering. Those profiles can override name resolution inside the tunnel.

iCloud Private Relay is fine to leave on. It steps aside while a VPN is active.

If it still does not work

At this point, the problem is unusual enough that we need a closer look. Email [email protected] with three things: the network you are on (home Wi-Fi, office, mobile operator), which line you tried, and roughly what time it happened.
