Telegram notifications not working with VPN

The timing makes it seem obvious: you installed a VPN, and since then Telegram stays silent until you open it. Then twelve messages arrive at once. Before blaming the tunnel, it helps to understand how a notification actually reaches an iPhone, because that explains why the VPN is rarely the cause and what usually is.

How push notifications reach your iPhone

Telegram's servers do not contact your iPhone directly. They hand the notification to Apple, which delivers it through a single persistent connection that iOS keeps open in the background. Notifications from every app use that connection. With Nono VPN, that connection runs through the tunnel like other traffic, so there is no separate notification setting to configure and no separate notification channel for the VPN to block.

So when notifications go missing, first check the iOS settings that can limit background activity or stop Telegram from waking, rather than assuming the VPN itself is the problem.

1. Background App Refresh for Telegram

This is the most common cause. Go to Settings, General, Background App Refresh:

• The top setting should be Wi-Fi & Cellular Data, not Off or Wi-Fi only.
• Further down, the switch next to Telegram must be on.

With it off, Telegram's background activity is restricted, so notifications can arrive empty, late, or not at all.

2. Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode disables Background App Refresh across apps; that is one of the ways it saves battery. While it is on, notifications can lag even when the other settings look right. Go to Settings, Battery, and turn it off. If you need it to save battery, use it deliberately when your charge is low rather than leaving it on all day. This mode also pauses VPN tunnels after the screen locks, which is covered in why iOS silently kills your VPN.

3. Focus modes and scheduled summary

Focus modes (Sleep, Work, Personal) can silence everything except allowed apps, and they can turn on automatically based on a schedule or location without you noticing. Go to Settings, Focus, open the active mode, and make sure Telegram is among the allowed apps. Separately, check Settings, Notifications, Scheduled Summary: if it is on, non-urgent notifications are held until the scheduled times.

4. Telegram's own settings

• In Telegram: Settings, Notifications and Sounds. Make sure notifications are on for private chats and groups, and make sure message previews are not disabled if you rely on them.
• In iOS: Settings, Notifications, Telegram. Allow Notifications must be on, with Banners or Alerts selected.
• A chat muted "forever" will not send notifications, regardless of the other settings. Open the chat and unmute it.

5. Offload Unused Apps and cellular data

Offload Unused Apps removes apps you have not opened for a while while leaving the icon in place. An offloaded Telegram receives no notifications until it is downloaded again. Go to Settings, App Store, and turn the feature off or open Telegram occasionally. Then check Settings, Cellular: cellular data for Telegram must be on, or messages will only arrive on Wi-Fi.

6. When the VPN is actually involved

If notifications arrive on Wi-Fi but not on cellular, the problem is with the connection as a whole, not just notifications. Your network may restrict one line type, and switching to a line of another type in the app usually fixes it. The steps are in VPN connected but no internet on iPhone. A two-minute test to check that everything works

1. Lock the phone and leave it alone for two minutes.
2. Have someone send you a message, or message yourself from another account.
3. The notification should appear on the lock screen within seconds.

If it only appears after you unlock the phone, go back to steps 1 and 2 first; those are the most likely causes.
